Club Information Update - Fall / Winter 2010

Sooooo . . . if we're not official . . . does that mean we're Rogue? :-)

Due to changes to club requirements, we are no longer an official OSU Club. Not sure when our e-mail address will expire and such, but the Blog is apart from the University, so we'll probably keep this going.

At the moment, we're still meeting as there is still a fair amount of interest in juggling and we'll be increasing the number of jugglers in the group soon as well.

We have been making use of the Kelley building common space for now, but are on the lookout for a better location (so if people have suggestions, we'd love to hear them!)

Times are currently the same as well. 5 - 7pm on Mondays, 6 - 8 on Thursdays. My time on Mondays is usually 5:15(ish) to 6:30(ish) as I have work, and then bowling league during the winter.

Additionally on the first and third Mondays, the Corvallis Juggling Group meets at Wilson School. I believe their time is from 7 - 9pm, so it is possible to go to both twice a month!

Also, those interested in a juggling teaching opportunity, there is an "open house" at the Kelley building this Saturday (starting at 9am and going until 6pm) where people are invited to share diverse skills and talents with others that might be interested. We were invited to participate by teaching juggling. Food is provided, so if people are interested, let's meet up on Thursday and go over a few things. I've got plans already this weekend, so I'll have to pass, but it sounds like a lot of fun, and free food is always welcome :-)

Looks like we're in transition at the moment, hopefully we get things all figured out and find a nice stable location to continue all the juggling fun!

Lebanon Feast Results

The whole gang went over to Lebanon to do some teaching and a performance for the High School's annual fund raiser for their Band and Choir programs.

The "Feast" was set up with and hour of "Faire" time, followed by a show.

Brenda, Kristen, Crizzly, Zeb, and myself all attended, with special guest Andree :-)

The teaching went pretty well, and we got several visitors to our booth, as well as used the opportunity to stay warm for the show.

Our portion of the show went very well. I started us off with the "Billy Shakes" routine, followed by a short 3 ball routine to some music. Then we performed both shows from the Bard in the Quad series. During the musical portion of our "Alternate" show, the students along the side of the wall really got into it and were dancing away. Was a lot of fun to see and made for a great moment :-)

The crowd was great and very energetic.

The stage was actually quite nice as well. Ceiling just high enough to handle the triples during passing (7 clubs) and the floor solid enough to do the bounce routine without any problems.

Food was pretty good as well (yes, we will juggle for food ;-)

I think this show concludes the season for us. I have a couple more events lined up, but as far as group shows go, I think it's pretty well done.

We will continue to meet up for juggling as best we can. Out in the quad as long as the weather is good, and in the Kelley building when we can as well.

We should also consider coming up with some sort of clever name for the "Troupe" that we can use for future events. I'll miss the OSU Jugglers though :-)

Looking forward to getting back to doing some "fun" juggling and not have to worry about rehearsals ;-)

Whiteside Jam Results

Due to weather issues, they moved the event inside.

I think the weather really impacted the number of people that attended the event. There were not a lot when we got there (about 45 min early) and they were running behind (an extra 30 minutes). So we took the extra time to check out the venue and then do lots of fun juggling to music in the back of the room.

The ceiling wasn't too bad, but took out any throws higher than a "7" (so no 97531 during the five ball sequence :-)

Zeb and I had a good time, with Brenda working the camera. We'll see if there's some good stuff to pull out from the 18 minute performance. Zeb clearly put in a lot of effort during his three ball routine to Jammin'. Had a good flow to it and a nice relaxed vibe. The diabolo was a good hit, and I had a great run of 7 balls on stage towards the end of the show. Figured, why not give it a go :-)

I'll have to check the video and count the catches.

Students should be coming back next week, so we'll see what the next step for the group is. Plus, we will have Tim return to us! We're really looking forward to seeing him again and getting a chance to do lots more fun juggling!

If the weather is good today, we'll be out in the quad, otherwise, we'll take over the Kelley building. It's a bowling night for me, so no club passing until Thursday.

Additionally, this coming weekend is the Portland Juggling Festival. It's held at Reed College in Portland. Usually a lot of fun, so if you're into juggling and want to have a good time, I strongly suggest you go! :-)

I'll be there throwing progressively easier tricks as the weekend goes on and the body breaks down ;-)

Whiteside Jam Performance

We will be helping out the Whiteside Jam Fundraiser (http://whitesidetheatre.org/whitesidejam.php) this Sunday by doing a 20 minute performance.

Show will be from 3:30 - 3:50 in "The Grove" :-)

We'll be filler entertainment between "Future Roots" and "O Horizon".

The event looks like a lot of fun and should be a blast.

Come on out and support the theater as well as supporting us! :-)

Bard in the Quad Videos!

Here are two videos from our Bard in the Quad performances.

The videos are from all of the shows, pulling out the best bits. Special thanks to Sophie for doing all the camera work for the shows.

The first video is the "Main" show that we performed. We did this show 7 out of the 9 times. Due to Kristen and Crizzly not being able to make it to a couple of the shows, we created an alternate show. Both shows were a lot of fun to perform and we'll be making use of them again in October in Lebanon for a fund raising show for the High School's music / drama departments.

Bard in the Quad 2010 - Show 9

Well . . . it's the last show.

Crizzly left a message stating that his back was still giving him problems and that he and Kristen were still in Portland, so we readied the "B" show to finish on. After Saturday, we figured we could do that.

The final Sunday is usually a bit of a smaller crowd (as was the case this year too) and the added heat probably made the crowd a bit smaller too.

Also it turned out to be a rather rough show. I was quite droppy, messing up the Box section, messing up the Duo section to the point where we struggled to get back on track. I even messed up my Diabolo section of the Finale (clearly I was going for the Trifecta :-)

Brenda and Zeb soldiered on and carried the show. Zeb was the shining star tonight, really kicking my booty during the duel and had an awesome seven ball collect at the end of the duel to seal the deal . . . heh heh.

Very glad he was there to take up some of the slack I was producing.

Sophie helped out on camera again, and we used her for the collections too. I'm sure it's a good thing we did as after that show I knew our collections would be down. Still a great run of shows and a much needed boost to the funds for the convention!!!

Some interesting notes:

We managed the entire run without ever having a night under $100. First time ever!

Our per-show average was actually HIGHER than last year even though we made more last year. $186 per show avg. compared to $177. Probably would have topped last year's take with one extra show :-)

We now have over $4K towards our convention!!! Fantastic!!!

Bard in the Quad 2010 - Show 8

Hey hey it's the "B" show!

Brenda, Zeb and I met up and practiced the show quite a few times before heading over to the Quad. It was super hot during the day, but things cooled off quite quickly as our performance drew near.

All of us were quite excited about performing the show, and even Sophie was excited to film it. I hoped the jokes worked for the crowd and there are some tricky sections that I really hoped we could pull off.

Things worked great!

The cigar box section went pretty smoothly. Almost nailed the rotation trick, and managed to save it ok.

Brenda's throwing from three into 4 into 5 into 6 section worked really really well. Did a collect into multiplex that kept things going long enough for her to throw in the 7th beanbag. The crowd really enjoyed that section, which got them prepared for the Duel between Zeb and I.

Once the Dueling Banjos music started, the crowd response was awesome. They laughed, and then started clapping along with the music. The fell apart a bit towards the 7 ball passing end, but it fell apart to comedic effect, which is what we wanted anyway.

The finale to "Company of Fools" was a hit as well, and kept the show energy up and rolling.

All in all, it was a very fun performance and everyone did great!!!

It was also our highest night of collections, even though we didn't break $300 like we did last year on the final Saturday (I blame the heat).

Bard in the Quad 2010 - Show 7

Crizzly was a real trooper today. His back was pretty much killing him, but he managed to perform quite well. Luckily for him he will be able to take tomorrow off as we debut the "B" show.

The Friday crowd was fantastic, which hopefully helped :-) They were a lot of fun and we had a quite fun performance as a result. Brenda and I managed to have a drop free Duo routine and Sophie did a great job of capturing it on video. Should make it a bit easier to put together all the "best bits" from the show that way. There will also be an "out takes" video as we have lots of footage for that, and perhaps even a "great saves" video . . . heh heh.

Made the most tonight thus far for our collections. I really think we can reach the $1500 mark!

Bard in the Quad 2010 - Show 6

Thursday's crowd was a really good one! Very responsive and paid well too ;-)

We've been really fortunate with the wind as of late. It's been staying calm for our club portion and we very much appreciate it.

Temps are supposed to get really hot from here on out so it will be interesting to see how that goes for us. Thankfully we are performing in a shaded area, and it isn't too long into the show that there is a nice shaded area for the crowd. Will the higher temps keep the crowds a bit lower? Only time will tell.

We also have the alternate show coming up on Saturday. Practice is looking good for it and I think we will have some fun performing the new stuff :-)

Bard in the Quad 2010 - Show 5

Traditionally the second Wednesday of the production run is the lowest with regards to amount of funds collected. This year, we changed that trend! :-)

Things are going to get rather toasty soon as temps are forecasted to be in the 90's as we go into the weekend. Thus, I decided to wear a short sleeve shirt and Brenda skipped wearing a vest for the performance. Keeping cool on stage is a bit more important.

It certainly helped me, and I think Brenda was more comfortable as well. We had quite a bit of wind this time, which actually made the 6 club sequence a challenge. However, the wind showed mercy and dropped down right as we started up our 7 club stuff. Had a really nice run of 7 clubs and the audience was great!

Sophie was kind enough to do the filming again, and got some great shots in the "over the shoulder behind the performers" angle.

It was a great way to kick off the second week of performances. Everyone is adding their own nice touches to the performances and I think everyone is having a good time. We even got some practicing in for the "B" Show which we will be performing on Saturday. I know Zeb is very excited, and I'm looking forward to it as well. We're still getting a few of the final details for the finale done, but I think it will come together quickly.

The first part of the B show is pretty well ready, as Zeb keeps getting better and better at passing 7 beanbags (both 2 count and ultimates).

So, we'll keep the good vibes rolling and keep the energy up as well!

Sunday - Wrapping up the first week of shows

Sunday morning had lots of rain, but by mid morning, it was starting to get sunny and warm. We were a bit concerned that the wet ground might reduce the number of people, but it seemed to be holding pretty consistent. To me the crowd seemed a bit more noisy / less attentive this time, but it could have just been my perception. Show went pretty well, I finally had success at the three up, so I was happy with that. We did have some crashes with the 7 club finish, but did our best to play it up anyway :-)

Chris Comstock (former president of the juggling club) was visiting so he got a chance to check out the show and even contributed to the collection. The night’s take wasn’t too bad with it being $140 even.

I think everyone is going to enjoy a couple days off to recharge and be all set for the Wednesday show. We’ll be working on the “alternate” show on Monday, so there isn’t all that much of a break I suppose, but we’ll have to get that one going as we’ll be performing it on Saturday!

Oh, since we’re at the “half way” point of the shows, I thought it might be nice to put the collections into perspective.

2006 - $383 ($76.60 avg per show)

2007 - $314.99 ($52.50 avg per show)

2009 - $744.80 ($148.96 avg per show)

2010 - $657.96 ($164.49 avg per show)

Considering we’re one show down, we are actually averaging over 2009’s collections.

We’re also just $150 off from catching the entire 2006 run, and $250 off from catching the entire 2007 run. Would be hard pressed to catch last year’s total, but we will certainly give it a go :-)

The second Wednesday of the production run is traditionally the lowest in collections, so we’ll see if that holds true again this time. Personally I’m going to attack the show with all sorts of energy!

Bard in the Quad 2010 - Show 3

Saturday – All Systems Go!

A bit overcast with the weather, which allowed us to do a fair amount of performing closer to the crowd. Did have to move back into the shadows after the first routine though as the sun started to show itself through the clouds.

Had a really nice crowd on Saturday. Energetic, and into the show. Show went pretty smoothly and everyone is adding some nice touches to the show. I had a few drops, and missed the three up into five with the duo routine, but came much closer.

Did have an awesome save during the seven club portion, catching a pair upside-down and fixing one with a self toss, and the other with a thrown one and a half spin to Crizzly.

Sophie was nice enough to film the show again, this time with Zooooooooom :-)

When the shows are all done, I’ll cobble together the best bits and put together a video. I think I’ll really enjoy getting all sorts of different angles to play with during the editing process.

One thing that is new this year is the Bard in the Quad group is providing pre-show music, so while we are waiting to go on, we get some fun music to play around with ahead of time.

Bard Show Number 3 . . . or is that 2?

Back on track tonight! I kept a close eye on the Bard in the Quad website and there were no cancellation messages (yay!)

So, we met up at six for our pre-show warm up and then headed over to the location.

Seeing the stage all set made us quite happy as well :-)

Tonight we were joined by Sophie who was kind enough to do the filming of the show.

The amount of wind we were experiencing was a bit of a concern. There are only a few elements that are very prone to wind issues, but one of them is an entire 7 club passing sequence that lasts for quite some time. So, we figured we were in for some challenges, but can't dwell on the things we can't really change.

The crowd was a fair amount larger tonight (as to be expected) and right away, they had some really good energy. There was one lady in the crowd that really enjoyed the jokes in the routines and that made things quite fun for us! :-)

The first routine went really really well. Crizzly and I were even able to do some sword battle and have the clubs hit each other . . . heh heh. The duo routine went pretty well, I messed up the three up in to five again. I'll have to dedicate some extra practice for it tomorrow.

The finale club passing went rather well too. It was amazing, but right before we went into the 7 club portion . . . the wind . . . died down. This made things waaaaaaaay easier!

I did the end speech and Crizzly did the "Side Bet" addition. Just one taker in the $20 suggestion, even though it was two $10 bills :-)

Really good group though as we probably had some combined crowd from the cancelled show the day before.

We did break $200 for the night, which is awesome! Let's keep it going!

Zeb and Sophie decided to stay to watch the play. We're looking forward to hearing a full report tomorrow night from Zeb and Monday from Sophie :-)

The Curse of No-Show #2

Ahhh . . . wouldn't be "The Play that should be mentioned" if there wasn't some sort of curse involved with it, right?

Well, for night number two, the curse struck.

We were to meet up at 6pm at the Kelley building to go over the show again. Brenda and I got there and set things up and Zeb arrived soon after. Brenda and I went through our duo routine, and then the three of us headed over to the Quad. We were discussing if we needed to run though the Alternate show as it looked like there was a possibility that we would need to perform it.

As we get to the quad, we noticed something quite unusual. There weren't any staging for the show. All their "props" were gone and the stage was rather bare.

Never a good sign :-)

Well, it turned out the curse had struck them, and their lead was out sick, so the show had to be cancelled. We're hoping that he will be feeling better for Friday. Crizzly and Kristen were late as Crizzly managed to injure his back and was having trouble moving around.

This curse stuff gets pretty serious sometimes . . . heh heh.

Well we actually went through the show at the right time on stage and had a few people watching us practice. Passed the hat, and while we didn't make any money, we were treated to some rather yummy blackberries (thanks Sophie!)

We'll give it another try on Friday and hopefully everything will be back on track!

Not sure if they will be adding any shows to make up for the missing one or just skipping over it. My guess would be if they have to cancel another one, they will add more, but since it was a Thursday show, they might consider just skipping it.

Bard in the Quad 2010 - Show 1

A great start to the season!

We met up at the Kelley Building early to do a dress rehearsal in a building with no wind issues and some nice A/C ;-)

Warm up and practice went fine, so we headed over to the staging area.

Got set up without any problems (thanks Gibby!), tested the sound system and ran through a few last minute blocking ideas.

Weather was rather nice for the show. Not too hot, and the wind was minimal, which is always a good thing for us :-)

Brenda, our official time keeper let me know when it was time to start and away I went.

Intro speech went fine and we started up our new Romeo & Juliet Juggling Version routine.

I really liked the way this went. The audience seemed to "get" the jokes and I think it has a nice amount of variety / silly stuff going on with it. Crizzly and Kristen played up the Romeo and Juliet parts nicely, and Zeb attacks his part with some amazing vigor . . . heh heh.

Before the run of shows are over though, I think Crizzly and Kristen will be a bit too good at Poi for what the show calls for ;-)

The transition into the Duo routine was smooth. Brenda had an amazing recovery during the routine and if it wasn't for my collision on a three up go into 5, we would have had a drop free routine. I'll nail it next time.

Finishing off the night was our club routine with Crizzly, Kristen, and me (David). It went really well and I was quite pleased with how it turned out.

The crowd was about what I would expect for an opening Wednesday, but they were enthusiastic and made performing for them quite fun.

I gave our closing pitch before passing the hat and the $20 line has already worked! :-D

Brenda was our big money maker tonight pulling in not just one $20, but TWO. We won't mention how much Crizzly wound up collecting . . . heh heh.

Bard in the Quad - 2010

The shows are about to begin!

We had a fantastic practice on Saturday and are looking forward to the upcoming shows.

The first one will be Wednesday, August 4th. I'll do my best to update the blog with how things went and I'm also hoping to film each of the shows to cobble together a good edit for YouTube :-)

Upcoming Shows

We have some gigs that you can catch us at coming up soon.

We will be performing at the opening day of the Corvallis Knights Baseball team. There are lots of possibilities with this gig.

Performance opportunities include:

Juggling before the game to entertain the crowd before they enter the stadium.

Juggling on-field with a 5 minute performance before the first pitch.

Juggling during the game in the beer garden area or any other area where people can see us.

We can stay as long as we'd like and pretty much do whatever :-)

Performance is on Tuesday, June 15th.

We're also going to be opening for the Bard in the Quad again this year.

That's our primary fund raiser for the FREE CONVENTION, so we'll be putting together a nice solid 15 min performance. Ideas are already bouncing around and we'll go with the same concept that we did last year, recording all the audio beforehand which makes it move much smoother.

Brenda and I are ready with our Duo routine, and I think some of the Baseball routine will work for our finale. I'll also be writing / recording the "story" portion about juggling scenes in some of Shakespeare's more known works. In the process of fleshing that out already :-)

Welcome New Students!!!!

To those that have found this blog via one of the mini-flyers.

Welcome!

Feel free to look around and check things out!

Along with the new school season, we have new opportunities to learn lots of cool new stuff and share interesting and fun ideas with each other.

The weather has been looking really nice as of late (though a bit on the cooler side) so we might be out in the quad on Thursday from 6 - Dark.

Otherwise, we'll be in the McAlexander Fieldhouse from 6pm - 8pm. Typically we go grab food at some local establishment and chat about juggling or any other topics after the club time is done. You are welcomed and encouraged to join us and have some fun!

If anyone has any particular goals in mind for their juggling, just let us know and we'll see if we can come up with ways to help out! Personally, I'd like to make a new 4 ball video with all sorts of interesting and somewhat "experimental" 4 ball tricks, so if you have some suggestions or such, bring your ideas to the next meeting and I'll give them a go!

Final Night . . .

Well, that's a wrap :-)

Our last show for the run has come to an end and we've had a great time!

Ended with a near flawless show as well, so it was a great one to finish with.

Crowd was a bit smaller than last night, but still had good energy and helped us move over the $1750 mark!

Special thanks to Gibby and the entire Bard in the Quad staff for allowing us the opportunity. It was very beneficial to our fund raising, and gives us a fantastic start towards the 2011 convention. We're really hoping that we can do it again next year :-)

Also special thanks to all the performers for a job well done. Congrats to Brenda and Kristen for getting out there and doing their first juggling performances! Well done!

Crizzly, way to be a solid passer, and always fun to perform with. We'll get you out there doing the "Shakespeare" routine one of these days ;-)

Best Night, Best Crowd!

What an awesome crowd we had tonight :-)

You know it is going to be a good night when the crowd is huge, and they are really responsive. When I first came out to say that the OSU Juggling Club would be doing the pre-show entertainment, we got applause . . . heh heh.

I introduced Crizzly and Brenda and they got applause.

The Radio Program got great responses and nice groans at all the right times :-)

Brenda's bounce routine was once again spot on, perfect with the music and super smooth.

The diabolo went well, managed to get really lucky with the high throw in the wind. It drifted quite a bit on me, but I was still able to catch it, and the audience always seems to enjoy that moment . . . heh heh.

Oddly enough, the start of the club routine was a little glitchy as the music didn't start at the right time. Brenda was able to get it going though and we were back on track.

Did the end speech and Crizzly had a new twist on the "side bet". We waded into the large crowd and it was a good thing again that Brenda was with us to help with collections.

Took quite a while to count things up this time. Did get another three $20's. So that's always a great way to start things :-)

Broke all kinds of records tonight and have to adjust our goal in a upward direction!

Keli was generous enough to help film the show, so now we have two copies of the show from different perspectives. We'll get one more show taped on Sunday and I'll see if there's anything I can do with the footage.

Brenda rejoined our group, and Keli made a surprise visit as well!!!

Naturally we put her to work, filming the show. It was actually the first time she's seen us do a show, so I think it was a good experience for her :-)

The crowd was really good again. Nice size and energetic!

We had the volume nice and loud this time, and good responses during the Radio Show.

Brenda's bounce routine was a thing of beauty this time. Super smooth, right on time with the music, flawless performance.

The diabolo went well, and we moved on to the club juggling.

Overall the club routine went really well and was a lot of fun. Had to dodge the sun a bit during the passing, but we managed just fine :-)

It was really nice to have Brenda back for the passing of the hat. Made it much easier / quicker to do the collections.

Crizzly did the side bet line again and our very first contribution was a $20! :-)

We managed to have the second best night and there is an outside chance we could reach the ever rising goal of $1500 now!

Had a fantastic show tonight! Quite a bit more people than last night, and there was a lot of energy in the crowd as well.

We were down one person as Brenda was feeling quite a bit under the weather due to bad allergies, so Crizzly and I came up with something to fill the 1 minute 38 seconds of time.

Since I use that time to change out of my costume, we needed to figure out something that Crizzly could do for just a bit before I came out and joined him.

Decided to go with some 5 ball trick stuff, and it actually worked out just fine. However, we're both hoping that Brenda will be feeling up to doing the bounce routine during that time for the next show :-)

The Shakespeare routine went well, and the audience was nice and responsive. We pumped up the volume a bit and I think that helped.

The diabolo went well too.

The club routine (look it's a trend) went well. I had some silly drops during passing, but overall it was fun and the crowd enjoyed it.

Did the closing speech and then handed the mic over to Crizzly to cover the "side bet" idea. Must have worked as we managed to pull three $20 from the crowd again :-)

Took a bit longer to cover the crowd with the two of us, and there were a few times when I thought we had everyone covered only to find some people holding money aloft . . . heh heh.

Overall, it was a great show and we were able to break two records in one night.

We managed to take in the most in one night we have ever done, plus, we have exceeded our best year's take as well.

Wednesday's Show . . .

The first of the second half of shows.

Performance wise, the show went really well. A few minor drops, but a solid performance by all. For some reason though, the show felt a bit flat tonight. Not as much reaction from the crowd and not as much energy from them fueling our show.

Weather wise, it was a bit cooler than usual, but we were fortunate not to have any sun issues nor have any wind issues to speak of either.

Did the "side bet" line at the end, but didn't have any takers this time :-(

We'll try again tomorrow and see what happens.

Brenda got the night off (which meant that she did the sound and early packing after our show was over) as Kristen did the bouncing routine.

The Half way point

Well, we're at the half way point in the show run, and things are really going well.

Crowd was great tonight. They even applauded when I came out to do the introduction . . . heh heh.

Radio program went great and is nice and smooth at this point.

Brenda's bounce routine got some applause during her tricks which was really cool.

The sticks and strings for the diabolo held together tonight so I actually got to perform the entire thing :-) Without any drops, or snarls . . . woo hoo!

Had one drop during my solo club juggling, and we had a couple of wind induced drops during passing, but other than that, it was a very clean show.

Did something a little different with the end speech this time. Crizzly thought it would be a good idea to say that we had a side bet going, that whoever gets the first $20 in the hat the other person has to match it. So, we gave it a go and had a great response!

Actually got not just one $20, but THREE! :-D

We'll be sure to try it again on Wednesday and see how it goes.

Much better show tonight.

Had a few drops, but overally it went a lot more smooth.

Crowd was nicely responsive to the Radio routine. I switched out for a newer string for the Diabolo for this time's routine, and guess what . . . it broke!

Broke a bit further away from the end this time, so was again disappointed with the results of that. For tomorrow, I'll be using Brenda's sticks and string which is as new as I can get.

I do have some backups just in case as well.

Had just a couple of drops during the club passing, but the 7 clubs went really well. The hat lines worked great and I'm a bit more used to the mic now, so that's good as well.

Plus, we set a new record, which is always enjoyable, including receiving a $20!!!

Third time not quite the charm . . .

So, coming off our best show, we followed it up with our worst one.

Not that it was horrible, just not quite up to the standards of the second show.

What went wrong . . .

Weather was a bit of a factor. It had been overcast the majority of the day, but the sun decided to pop out and wreck a little havoc during the performance. Wind was a bit of a factor but not too bad.

Things started ok. Used the mic for the first time during the opening, and it went well, just have to get a bit more used to it :-)

Shakespeare routine went fine.

Kristen did the bouncing for us tonight and that went ok as well (Brenda enjoyed the night off). Granted it was a first performance kind of thing, but really not too bad.

The Diabolo routine was where things started to fall apart. Had another snarl during the string climb (almost tempted to leave it out at this point) but worse, I had a string snap. Towards the end of the routine, I was suddenly without a string between two sticks. I was left with a stick, and a whip . . . which isn't quite as useful for doing the Diabolo :-(

Ended the routine there and moved into the club finish. Had a lot of drops there as well. Some of which were really pointless.

Stumbled a bit on the end speech as well.

One of those, if it could go wrong, it did, kind of shows.

Wasn't expecting much from the take, but we were pleasantly surprised.

I'm certain that the next shows will be better. In a way it's nice to get that one out of the way :-)

Amazingly enough, the second night was even better than the first!

Setup was a bit easier. Brenda and I went early to try and scope out a better spot for Brenda to do the bounce routine. After checking over the entire location, we managed to find a spot that wasn't too bad. Not idea, but at least a little less "random" than the other spot. It paid off :-)

We started the show a bit eariler (6:55) and figured that would give us enough time to do the collections and be cleared out by 7:15. Gibby once again made sure we were set up and taken care of. I brought an extension cord with me this time, so it allowed us to move the sound system to a slightly better location.

I also wrote up what to say for the intro and for the conclusion just to have more structure for me :-)

The Radio Program idea for the Shakespeare story is really working well. I'm getting into it a bit more each time, so that's fun too. Crizzly is going to give it a try one of these times and I'm looking forward to seeing how that goes too . . . heh heh. I still have a few added minor touches that I can do, but all in all, the routine moves smoothly and has been very well received.

Brenda's bounce routine was silky smooth as well this time. She was much happier with her performance and I think we'll be using that spot more often.

I had a snarl during the string climb section of the diabolo, but it wasn't too bad. Plus the weather was great and not too much wind, so I was able to launch it quite high, much to the delight of the crowd :-)

The entire club routine went off without a hitch. No drops, despite my best efforts to try and get Crizzly to drop at one point. I threw a crossing double and for some reason immediately threw a triple (guess I was thinking we were in 2 count rather than 4 count). Luckily, Crizzly was in the process of launching a triple of his own, so it managed to work out.

I extended the speach just a bit at the end, figured if I said we were going to pass the hat, then do a bit of talking, it let them get more prepared for getting money out and such :-)

Kristen joined us and will be performing in our 3rd show, taking Brenda's place for a night. She helped out with the collections, which went quickly and smoothly. Plus, we did even better than last night! How awesome is that? :-)

First Night of the new season

Wednesday marked the opening night for the Bard in the Quad performances.

It's an excellent opportunity allowed to us, and it's great to be working with them again.

I'll just say that Gibby Reynolds (Production Manager) is awesome! :-) Probably the nicest and most helpful Tech person we have ever had the honor to work with! When asked if they had an open plug for us to put the PA system into, he was right there helping us out and getting us going.

We had some battery issues, so it was quite helpful to have a solid power source.

Show's goal was to be 15 minutes, so we actually took out one routine to make sure we fit with the time.

I opened the show by welcoming the crowd and we tried out the "Bard Broadcasting Network" Shakespeare Radio Routine. I think it went well, and it was fun to play along with the radio. Routine seemed to be received well.

Our second routine was the debut of Brenda's Bounce Routine! I think she did awesome considering the space was a bit more difficult than what she was used to. We're going to check out a better "spot" for the bounce before the next show. She kept her composure, and bounced her way to success :-)

Her routine gave me the opportunity to change, and get ready for the next routine, the diabolo. It went pretty well. Chucked the diabolo up high into the wind and it carried it quite a bit further than I expected, so was unable to catch it. Got it off of a double bounce, but will probably be a bit more careful next time . . . heh heh.

With that routine done, it moved us right into the final routine (this stuff moves very quick!) and we finished with our typical closing song.

Sequence for this one was:
Solo start
3 - Club interaction
6 - Club passing - 4 count tricks
6 - Club passing - 2 count tricks
7 - Club Finish

It went pretty well, and I think we can make a few sections even more smooth. Having the Shakespeare part be on audio helps in a few ways:

1. It's always the same. The routine is exactly 5 minutes long. Once the ball starts rolling, we know exactly where it will end :-)
2. No worries about people not hearing it!
3. Plug and Play jugglers :-) We can sub out the "performer" as it's not all that difficult a routine to learn. Just be sure and stretch a bit before entering the "Shakes" part, or you'll be sore the next morning ;-)

I concluded the show with some talk about passing the hat and what we use the donations for. Then Brenda, Crizzly and I went through the crowd.

The show worked out to be 15 minutes on the nose, but we'll need to start just a tad before 7pm to make sure we're done collecting and packing up before our 7:15 cerfew :-)

Gibby was very encouraging after our performance and just solidified what a difference a great attitude has on a show! It helps keep the energy UP and really makes thing be much more positive all the way around.

Plus . . . our first night's take was far more than any of us expected. I'll have to go through the archives and put it into perspective.

Ok, after a brief check, it looks like the take was about 3 times better than either first show from the 2006 or 2007 season :-) Let's see if we can keep that trend going!

Old Spice Swagger Juggling

And now . . . the story:

A rep from Old Spice posted this contest in rec.juggling and suggested that juggler's from the newsgroup enter.

I checked the qualifications and since I met them . . . I figured . . . why not? :-)

So, went out and spent some $$$ on some products and Crizzly and I pondered juggling possibilities. I had some things in mind, but took a little while working out the script.

Juggling the product was really tricky. 4 was a challenge and 5 was terribly difficult. I only bought 5, but Crizzly and I speculated that passing 7 wouldn't be all that difficut if I wanted to purchase some more.

Sadly, the majority of the footage that I shot at the campus of me juggling, I couldn't use. The footage was too dark. The stuff that made it into the video was done in the back yard and it's too bright, but not much I could do about it. At least the objects show up really well.

All of it was shot in about . . . 30 minutes in the back yard. I knew I wasn't going to get any super long runs, so I wanted to get a variety of tricks rather than one long run. Each trick needed to last at least 5 seconds, which wound up ruling a lot of them out. I tried for a fair amount of time to get the 4 shower, but just couldn't get it going. Likewise for the 7333 machine. However, the 552 weave worked waaaaaaaaay better than I could ever expect. I do wish the 552 "Apply" at the end of the video showed up a bit better, but oh well. At least I managed a clean collect and some swagger to tie in the shots.

Special thanks to Crizzly for great ideas and nice solid 5 ball stuff, and to Brenda for being the Hottie :-)

At the time of this writing there are 2 entries, and the other entry is a very straight forward juggling video (which might be what they are looking for) so we'll see how things go.

Overall, it was a lot of fun to put together and another excuse to work in the 4 ball Weave into a video :-)

Bard in the Quad

It's soon going to be that time of year again :-)

We have been asked to open the performances by the Bard in the Quad folks. This is an excellent opportunity to raise funds for our juggling convention (PNWJC).

I'm really excited about it and look forward to getting something worked up for the show. We have several people available for doing shows (Brenda would even like to do something!) so I think we can have a lot of fun and entertain the crowd as well.

Performances are on the following schedule.

Aug 5 - 9 & Aug 12 - 16.

We'll probably go on at 7pm and go until 7:15 / 7:20.

Greetings!!

Crizzly and I had a good show for the Roller Derby Half-time Performance over the OSU Mom's weekend, and we have some more shows coming up!

We'd like to get everyone that is interested in performing involved, so feel free to show off some of those mad skills at our upcoming shows.

Show 1 - Relay for Life Midnight show!

This one is being held in the MU Quad (yes, outdoors :-) on May 15th at Midnight! Tradition has it that it rains at this performance, so we'll be prepared once again . . . heh heh.

The performance tends to be as "free form" as we get, so the more diverse the participation the better! It sort of works out to be a "Juggling Jazz Jam" with some music going and some improv stuff.

I'm putting together a playlist for the event to download onto my iPod. If the weather is good (yeah right), I'd like to start the show by doing a globall routine with the new toys to "Midnight" by Yaz. Figure the next song would be "After Midnight" by Clapton. Crizzly and I could recycle some of the Roller Derby routines if needed.

We're looking at a 30 minute "show", with some teaching follow-up.

If you've ever wanted to get up and perform, this would be a perfect, low stress opportunity!

Show 2 - Physics Fund Raiser Show :-)

Wow, a paid gig!

We've been asked by the Physics Department, to do a short show / teaching at their physics picnic on June 6th. Trick is to incorporate physics and juggling into a show. Thankfully, that's rather easy as we're going to focus on Site Swap, and teach the mathmatics behind the juggling.

We'll chat more about things, but might go with a "simulator" approach. Keeping it moving, short and entertaining is our best bet. Plus, bringing lots of excitement to get people interested in learning to juggle as well!

All money will go directly to funding the next juggling convention (currently scheduled for 2011).

With the lack of Shakespeare shows, the more paid shows we can get, the better!

Show 3 - 4th of July show in Lebanon.

Just plugging my own show. Will be working the grounds and doing a stage performance once again for the 4th of July Celebration in Lebanon. Usually a 30 minute show. Typically toasty, and with a rather low ceiling (which you wouldn't expect for an outdoor event . . . heh heh)

Heat in McA!

In a strange yet fortunate turn of events, it seems that they will be turning on the heat in McA for our event... noone seems to have known that it was even a possibility, so we are very pleased!

That being said, it's a huge space (as you know), so wether it can actually heat that space in that amount of time, well, we'll see I suppose. :)

Ok, so the results are in for the final design... With that, we went and got the t-shirts made. The colors are fabulous, and are limited in quantity for any given color (note the pictures of the assortment we received), so be sure to buy your shirt early to get first pick at the color(s) you want most! :)

Also, please fill out our poll so we get an idea of what size(s) and quantity of shirts you hope to get for you and your family... If you want a shirt larger than XL, it'd be nice to know that pre-event, as we don't currently have any of those printed yet for sale.

New Club President!

It seems we slipped and didn't announce our new club president: Mark Delcambre!

We'd like to give a warm welcome, and thank him for all the work he's done for our upcoming convention already! (that he won't even get to attend until very, very late)

So, we've worked really hard on the t-shirt design for this year (as the logo itself will be our 'timeless logo' design for our letterhead, etc). The only thing left is to choose the font we want to use! :) To that end, *please* go to our convention blog and cast your vote for the font(s) you like most. Jugglers get hooked on the toss

Students and community members converge to toss some fun at McAlexander fieldhouse on Tuesdays and Thursdays

Avid jugglers and anyone looking to simply try something new can look no further than the OSU Juggling Club.

Each Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. and Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m., students and community members meet in McAlexander Fieldhouse to practice their individual skills, work together and have fun.

Membership is open to anyone, and the club's casual membership brings in a small group of students with a variety of skills.

"When they're here, they have lots of things they can work on," said David Sallee, and instructor for the club. His wife Brenda is the faculty advisor.

"Once we get a student to the point where they are passing, throwing things at each other, they tend to come again and again."

Along with juggling, Sallee said the club has welcomed students who were interested in working on acrobatics and gymnastics. "It's becoming quite diverse," he said.The club works on juggling everything from small bean bags to bowling pin-like clubs to rings. The instructors bring props, but Sallee explained that jugglers eventually collect many of their own. "The more you get into juggling, the more props you wind up just accumulating," he said.

The club does work with torches or swords, but Sallee said that they are not very dangerous; swords are slightly dull, and torches use flammables that usually will not hurt a juggler.

"Chainsaws, we don't ever bring in," Sallee said.

According to Sallee and Crizzly, another instructor in the group, the only other juggling group in Corvallis is the Corvallis Unicycle and Juggling club. Since the OSU club meets twice a week, much more frequently than the Corvallis group's twice a month, the instructors give students a greater chance to practice.

No matter the student's skill level, the instructors said they work to be inclusive to all members. "Some people in the group don't know how to pass clubs, but we can still include them when we're passing clubs because we can do things called steals and replacements," Sallee said of juggling clubs with two or more people. "It's not a requirement that they know how to juggle clubs to do that, and it's just something fun to do.

"We try to make it as open as possible, and as instructors try to be as approachable as possible."

Though the instructors and members have fun, there's more to the club than just practice.The club, along with Corvallis unicycle group, One-Wheel Wonders, will host the Pacific Northwest Juggling Convention from March 27 to 29 at the McAlexander Fieldhouse. Juggling games and demonstrations from both jugglers and unicyclists will go on in McAlexander during the convention. Vendors of juggling equipment and clothing will also be at the event.

"Our goal is to have the Fieldhouse actually be open for 24-hour juggling," Sallee said.

The event designed for everyone from the inexperienced to the expert.

"Chances are they can come and not know how to juggle when they get here, but they'll know how to juggle when they leave," Sallee sad.

Matt Hall, a multiple gold medal winner within the International Juggling Association, will be one of several celebrity guests at the conference, who will help teach workshops.

"[The guests] bringing with them a lot of knowledge," Sallee said.

In addition to the activities, the convention will host a family-friendly show on March 28 featuring nationally-known jugglers, Juggling Club members and the Corvallis Unicycle and Juggling Club.

The Renegade Show, held late Friday night, March 27 in McAlexander, will feature amateur acts trying new juggling tricks, and can prove to be entertaining.

"We never know what's going to happen," Sallee said.

The convention and show will be free to the public.In 2007, the club held its first convention. Sallee and Crizzly estimated that 700 visitors attended the convention throughout the weekend, and over 650 people came to the convention's main show in Milam Auditorium.The club does smaller local events as well as the convention. They have appeared at the Family Study Center at Bates Hall, residence halls and have opened for Bard in the Quad Shakespeare plays in the MU Quad in the summer.

The club is an outlet for the hobby that many come to learn just because it seems interesting.

"It's something I just picked up for fun," said Mark Delcambre, a junior in civil engineering and club member. He said his juggling skills improved since being in the club, and he has performed with the club at various local events.

"I started 26 years ago. It was cheap entertainment, and everyone else thought it was hard," Crizzly said.Sallee also started juggling at a young age.

"I learned how to throw three [tennis balls] around in about five minutes," he said. "I just kind of got hooked on it."

Today (Jan. 5th) is the official first day of the school term.

We should be back on track with juggling group get togethers. Which means we will be meeting on Mondays and Thursdays at our usual times (Monday 5-7, Thursday 6-8).

As a reminder we are still looking for one of our students in the group to take on the role of Club President. With the way the economy is, every edge you can have on your resume will help. Being the OSU Juggling Club President looks wonderful and could give you that extra bit in the resume making the difference between staring in the mail room and starting as the CEO ;-)

Well . . . ok . . . maybe not, but it's something we'll bring up at the Monday and Thursday group get togethers :-)

Hopefully everyone got some new toys to play with over the Holiday Break and are all ready to have some fun throwing things around!

A new president . . .

. . . and I'm not just talking about our country! :-)

Chris Comstock will be leaving the area (heading to Portland) and that means that we really need a new student president for the club.

Considering we also have a juggling convention coming up in March (27th - 29th) it will be vital that we have a student in place that can help us make that happen.

It will essentially be the first order of business when classes resume next year. So, those that are interested in filling the role, it gives you something to think about during the winter break.

If there are any questions or such as to "What does it mean to be President?" let me know and I can outline some thoughts on the subject, or we can have Comstock write up some info as well :-)

Since it's close to Thanksgiving, I figured I'd look over the video leftovers I had while Tim was here and see if I could put something together.

Focused on the Kelley Building, since that's where the majority of the vids were shot.

Theft while attending the PJF

As some folks may have heard, it was my car that was broken into at Reed College during the main show.

My fiancée Kristen and I had been on a 2wk "early honeymoon" road trip up and thru Canada, with the PJF being the last couple days of the trip for us. As a result, we had alot of gear with us. The back passenger window was busted out, and somehow they got the rest of the car open (meaning: they'd have to climb into that broken glass to reach the front doors, and I don't know how they couldn't have gotten sliced up during that, as even my gorilla arms can't reach that far safely). They went thru the glove box, center console, briefly ransacked the back seat, and then removed everything with a handle from the top section of the trunk. Ultimately the damages and losses are about ~$4500 as far as we can itemize so far. This included electronics, souvenirs, camera bags (Kristen is a professional photographer and lost all her gear except the camera itself which we had at the show with us), and, most important to this blog, all my juggling equipment.

To that end, I post a description of what juggling stuff I had taken:
- 13 Dubé 220g European Long Handle clubs with glow body, gold handles, and assorted metallic decorations that are all basically one-off's. The knob ends have my last name written on the washer ["M.ks.m..k" should be enough to recognize it].
- 7 Tossaballs, glow, one year of wear (bought at last PJF in fact)
- 14 Hybrid Tossaballs, some red, some yellow, and some blue. Bought that day. They were the 'heavy for their size' ones.
- The balls were in a small canvas shopping-style bag. At the bottom were the OSU Jugglers' business cards, and many of my own [hand written on the backs of WJF3 entry cards]. Oh, and an electronic metronome.
- All props listed (including the canvas bag) were inside a blue American Tourister zippered bag. There was a bunch of notes about passing patterns and various people's business cards and some other trinkets in the pocket of that bag too.

I'm still working with insurance to see what can happen there... Either way, the car insurance (for "everything bolted to the car", so, glass really) and the homeowners insurance (contents of car) both have a $500 deductible [yes, $1k total], which sucks given the market crashed the day we got back too [I've been living off stock and am at the tail end anyway, but talk about a kick while down.. yeesh].

I give a big thanks to Stuart and the folks at the PJF. Given our plight, they passed the hat at the end of the event, raising $280 toward our deductibles. That definitely helped take the sting out of yet-another-huge-bill-this-fall.

All in all, I have the same hopes that Dave had about his equipment getting stolen: I just hope some juggler gets the stuff instead of the landfill. Years later, Dave found a guy who had some of his stuff, and they talked about how he got it - passed thru a bunch of people until he bought it from some guy's roommate, etc, etc... So, basically, if you see someone with the clubs, just give them the 'sweet clubs, where'd you get those whacky designs?' line and see if they are ultimately innocent, then let me know so I can be happier that they are at least being used....

Visitors from Woodburn!

Of all the times for Crizzly to be off to Burning Man ;-)

We had several juggling visitors come on down from Woodburn on Thursday (8/21). Almost seemed like we had a juggling group there for a while . . . heh heh.

Not only the three people from Woodburn, but Kristen practiced some bounce juggling and Brenda came by to do some club juggling and diabolo work (nice whip catch work!).

While it's not a trip they can always make, it was really nice to see them.

Hopefully as school starts we can increase our numbers some more and get in some great juggling! In the meantime - the Portland Convention is coming up next month, and we have our own convention to work on as well.

OK, ok... so, it's been friggin hot lately... too hot to do the MU quad even... so, given McA is aparently closed for the summer (?!?) we've been meeting in the engineering building (Kelly? Keli? Kelley?) and working on things like bounce juggling. :)

So, if we're not in the quad, and it's too hot or way too windy, check Kelly Engineering! See ya there today at least! :)

Summer "Tim" Video

Well, had dinner with Tim last night and said "Bye" as he heads to TN for schooling.

Had a great time while he visited, and really glad that we put together the video.

Was pretty cool to see some of the ideas come to life and actually work out quite well, considering the limited amount of time that we had to work on them . . . heh heh.

Plus, I have a fair amount of footage, so I think I can get another video from the shots in the Kelley Building.

Might have to do some more shooting, but I'll take a look.

Technical Corner: May08

Last June, I posted about juggling trick "chains". I was talking with Tim about them tonite, and I likened them to musicians running scales, and we kinda liked that name better. I'll likely use them interchangeably for a while. :)

Back to the point, Tim found them really valuable tools to practice for other tricks with, and the more advanced usages of starting from tricks one knows, and taking small steps to get to tricks one wants to know... So, to that end, I'm adding this blog, and will later add links to various siteswap related tools in the sidebar on the right.

Let's start with the basics... 3 object scales. Ok, this will be rather short (read: potentially boring), but it lays the foundation for adding objects to the base patterns, but I'm getting ahead of myself.

Take the first simple one of the two digit sequences: 33, 42, 51, 60
{in geeky math terms: f(n)=( x+n , x-n ) ... where 'x' is the number of objects, and 0<=n<=x }

To get from the first to the second, one can do it after the '3'. To get from the second to the third, you simply throw the '5' after the '4'. Finally, you can get from the third to the fourth by throwing the '6' after the '5'. Putting that all together, one can have the useful sequences: ...333 333...333 42 333...333 4 51 2 333...333 4 5 60 1 2 333...

Basically, each subsequent pair is a 'trick' out of the previous pair. This illustrates how we can step thru other patterns to end up in an excited state pattern [ie: you can't just start throwing '51' directly from a '33' pattern, so that makes '51' an excited state from the '33' base pattern].

Now, taking that to a logical level, one can run the full sequence of transitions back to back: 34512 or 3456012. One would reorder those and come up with the sequences 12345 and 0123456. Personally, I find the first one more interesting, but both are worth trying. These will really hone your throw heights relative to each other. Any given day, your hand speed will vary a little faster or slower, and your throw heights will change accordingly. Running either of these will baseline your throw heights for that day, because if your heights are off, the pattern won't flow well, but once it smoothes out, you have established muscle memory for that day's practice.

The above example might be tricky for those just beginning, and it should be more a goal than an expectation.

Now, lets further explore the 42 root for other sequences.

The obvious way of extending this out: 42, 441, 4440
{geeky math terms: f(n)=( (x+1)^n , x-n ) }

Take 42 and extend it out: 42, 522, 6222, 72222, ... [kinda boring, but useful for 360s and other flourishes]
{ f(n)=( (x+n)^1 , (x-1)^n ) }

Taking 441 to the next level: 441, 5511, 66111, 771111, ...
{ f(n)=( (x+n)^2 , (x-2)^n ) }

Taking 4440 the same way: 4440, 55500, 666000, 7770000, ...
{ f(n)=( (x+n)^3 , (x-3)^n ) ... see the trend yet?}

I know, these seem boring, but there is potential in them...

Taking 51 compared to 33 { f(n)=( (x+2n) , (x-2)^2n ) } gets the sequence: 51, 711, 9111, ...
And the utterly useless 60 extension: 60, 900, c000, ...

Another style of sequence is: 3, 42, 531, 6330
This becomes a bit more obvious in style when written out sorta diagonally like Pascal's Triangle and for higher numbers of objects like: 5, 64, 753, 8552, 95551, a55550 or 7, 86, 975, a774, b7773, c77772, d777771, e7777770

OK, so "all that is just a bunch of numbers and simple patterns - now what?" right? :) Well, starting with the basics, let's "do something similar, but with one more object".

The simplest way to add an object is to add '1' to every digit in the sequence. The trivial example is '3' plus '1' gets the pattern '4', thus '5', '6', and so on. Pretty obvious, eh? :) Take '42', and one to each, and your get '53', and so on..

The other simple way to add an object is to add the number of digits in the sequence to one of the digits in the sequence. That seems a little strange, so here are a few examples:
'3' add '1' to one of the digits and you get '4'
'33' add '2' to one of the digits and you get '53' or '35'
'42' add '2' to one of the digits and you get '62' or '44'
'333' add '3' to one of the digits, and you get '633', '363', or '336'
'441' add '3' to one of the digits, and you get '741', '471', or '444'
'531' add '3' to one of the digits, and you get '831', '561', or '534'
'6330' add '4' to one of the digits, and you get 'a330', '6730', '6370', or '6334'
'12345' add '5' to one of the digits, and you get '62345', '17345', '12845', '12395', or '1234a'

Of course, both of these techniques works in reverse as well, thus giving one more options of related tricks that one might already be able to do or might pick up easily enough. One example of thought logic might be:

"I can do 441, I can add an object making it 741, then I can remove one ball and get 630, adding one back, I get 633, and removing one again I get 522, which I can add one back and get 552, and removing one I can get 441 again"

So, if one can do any of those listed, with a few minutes practice, one should be able to so any of the other related ones [even if one just sticks to the 3 object ones at first].

Therefore, you homework for this week is:
- extend out a few 'juggling scales' for your number-of-objects of choice and try them
- take your favorite sequence for however many objects, and try adding a ball to it using the above techniques

Thursday night while we were in McA, one of the rifle thrower military guys (color guard?) got impaled in the right forearm by a bayonet while rehearsing for their upcoming performance. Two of his colleagues rushed him off to the hospital for treatment, and I helped the other two lock up the rifles before they left to join the others.

I thus extend my best wishes to the poor young man, with hopes for a speedy recovery [and that he will not shy away from juggling in the future].

So, turns out there is a little kid roller hockey team that is paying to rent out the hard surface area of McA for the next few weeks... While they were nice enough to let us stay the first time, we were very distracting for the kids, so, in an effort to give jugglers a good name (and they are paying, and we aren't so it only seems right to us), we are going to hold the next few somewhere else.. ok, we're not sure where really.. if the weather gets nicer, outside will be an option, but this late winter and windy days are not making that easy yet. The engineering building is also an option, but dropping clubs on the floor indoors there may be a bit too noisy for our tastes...

So.. "the plan"... Meet at McA and decide where to go.. we can try various areas each night, let alone each week... *shrug* Suggestions anyone?

Technical Corner: Apr08

Dave and I come up with many ideas that we want to capture at a later point on film.. given the weather around here, and difficulties+time for filming ourselves, and (Dave) editing the vid, then posting it.. well, it can take months to get our really cool ideas up on video for folks to see. In the interim, I figured it might be nice to post periodic "here's our latest cool thing we want on film when we can". To that end, here are some of the highlights of the last month or so. :)

As you know, we've been working extensively with 7 club passing lately [in prep for the "7 Clubs 7 (More) Ways" video]... last night we realised the ease of segue possible if you had a right-right [standard, non-offset] pattern to yet another.. this is extremely common with 6 clubs, and noone gives it any thought.. obviously this is just as easy for 7 clubs, with some caveats.

There is a pattern for 6 clubs known as "PSSS PSS PS P PS PSS PSSS PSSSS".. ok, no idea what the name really is, but it switches immediately between 4-count, 3-count, 2-count, 1-count, then back up to a final 5-count to get it back to the same hands-that-pass as the first iteration. I looked at the 7 club version of 4-3-2-1-2-3, and well, it's too fast to really appreciate, even by other jugglers. :) Slowing it down tho, and you get a really sweet pattern that we actually managed to pull off repeatedly:

There is a beautiful parking structure exterior spiral staircase just one block north of LaSells and the football stadium. Being conveniently exterior, there is some great promise for vertical passing for folks hanging over the railing. Hard to describe, so here's a sim of it:

Astute folks will note it's a '4p 2 3' style pattern, similar to an early double in a typical pattern. The sweet part about the railing heights is that the lower passer throws a triple {which becomes a double as the upper passer catches it}, and the upper passer basically misses their self toss, and it becomes a double to the lower passer. It's a bit strange to feel, but it's really sweet after a few tries...

Prettying that up a bit for someone watching {we asked the stair walkers their opinion to verify}, passing with both hands is the most pleasant to do, and the most pleasant to watch: http://tinyurl.com/3xnw5w

Think of that last one as vertical equivalent to an "N" on the ground.

Clearly we didn't do that last one....yet... we figure it's something to consider for the convention. The biggest concern is that if a club from the 3rd or higher level hits the ground, it's basically destroyed as the bottom level is asphalt. Insert dreams of extra club catchers with blankets held between like the old firefighter thing in cartoons and silent movies...

Vertical 7 pattern... that seems totally doable, but our first night out at that location got rather cold after the sun set, so we didn't last out there too terribly long, thus didn't actually try this one yet..

Going with the stairwell idea, and the convention possibilities... we are hoping to do the following spiral pattern. Visually tho, it needs some setup. The stairwell is a left hand spiral (as you go up, you make left turns). It does the typical "half story of stairs, landing, half story of stairs back to next landing which is now one level up and directly above the previous one". The simulator is in stereo, just cross your eyes until the images overlap, and you'll see it in 3D. In case you haven't figured it out yet, you can actually grab-n-rotate the simulator's image as it goes, which may help if you slowly move it around for this one.

Here would be a great challenge for folks: keep going until you get your clubs back and then clean collect and finish...

Now, I know what you're thinking - how does everyone start at the same time?... simple, you designate the two corner folks to watch a spotter or two who are sync'ing up at ground level (ie: juggers in the 2, 4, 6, and 8 spots). To save you some thinking there, the spiral starts at the bottom with juggler 1, and goes up counter-clockwise (as the stairway does)... so the first four are positioned like so:

'1' and '2' are on same level as each other, '3' and '4' are on the half level up, and so on. '1' passes to '2' only as 4-count, '2' feeds '1' and '3' like normal, '3' feeds '2' and '4', and so on.. Clearly that can be extended to as many folks as we can scrounge. :) I smell (sorta-kinda-)annual challenge for the conventioneers!

If that works (too) well, we can include other typical feeds like 3-count (or PPS if ya like), and gorillas!

Here's something you might not have realised yet... Do ya have iTunes? probably - it's very common (as it can manage very large music collections easily) and is free to download... if you open that RSS feed link with iTunes, it turns all of our posted videos into a podcast for you. Thus, it will download a copy of the posted video to your system, and you can set the usual options like the frequency it checks for new vids, and so on.

Several folks have done just this, and are very pleased, so I figured I'd pass the idea along for everyone! :)

I understand that most should know their schedules for next term around now. To that end, I was hoping for input from everyone on what day(s) and time(s) would work best for them to show up for. My goal is to come up with (at least) two 2-3hr windows that would accommodate folks being able to attend for at least an hour during, thereby increasing attendance and thus the enjoyment of everyone involved. :)

A tale of two shows . . .

So, the 2008 STARS season is here!

Crizzly and I worked over the break to come up with a brand new show for the season.

Basic outline is as follows:

Diabolo Routine to Music
Review of 3 Ball Stuff
4 Ball Trick Demo
Beanbag Interaction to Music Routine
Club Passing Talk / Demo
Club Passing to Music Routine
Passing Clubs around a Teacher - Teacher in Peril :-)

We've done two shows thus far and they have been quite different.

The first show, totally felt like a "first show" . . . heh heh.

I started out by forgetting my handsticks, so we had to skip the Diabolo routine.
The 3 / 4 ball stuff was a bit hectic
The routine wasn't overly polished, so we had many "pausing" moments
At least the club stuff went well and we had a lot of fun passing around Comstock.

The Second Show . . . what a world of difference!

Opened with the Diabolo (actually had the sticks :-) and that went well, just one mess up
The beanbag stuff was fun, and we decided to do some "side-by-side" comparison juggling which I think worked great.

The Beanbag routine to music was sooooooooooooo much smoother. Still has room for some fine polishing, but really coming together nicely!

The club stuff went well too.

Plus, it was as if the kids were "in" on the show. One asked, "Can you guys pass clubs to music?" Well . . . as a matter of fact! :-)

We selected a young lady from the group (teacher young lady, not student young lady) and passed around her for the final. Crizzly spent most of the time passing trying to brush past her ponytail . . . heh heh. When we switched to two-count (everies) she got a bit more nervous.

All in all, it was a lot of fun, and when things go smoothly, it's right at 20 minutes. We could extend it a bit by doing some 3 club interaction. We had a bit of that in the last show, but we could make use of it again / extend it for the new run.

We have the 21st off as far as shows go (MLK Day), so we will be back at it with shows on the 28th in Jefferson.

Upcoming Thursday Meetings

Sure it's the holidays, but we're still throwing things around :-)

Killian's last visit with the group was great. Sorry to see him go. We did get in some fun practice with 5 balls.

This Thursday, the 27th, we will meet up around 5:30 ish or 6 ish at the Kelly building.

No meeting on the 31st, so the next get together will be Jan. 3rd, perhaps in the Kelly building again, if not back at the fieldhouse.

Also a reminder that our first School show of 08 will be on the 7th. We will be rolling out a brand new show for the groups. I'm sure by the end of the run we'll have it down :-)

Our only potential empty spot is the 9th of Jan. I can't make it to the teaching portion, and Kelly will still be settling into classes, so we'll need someone to fill in for that day.

7 Clubs 7 Ways Video

Crizzly and I put together a new video that is now Live on Google.

We wanted to have some fun with Seven clubs, and decided to come up with 7 different ways to juggle them.

We knew a few when we started, but really enjoyed "discovering" the different ways.

Some proved to be quite difficult.

Figured we would have some fun with the backgrounds and keep the video to a OSU themed campus adventure :-)

Video was shot over the period of three sessions.

Pass-Pass-Self was actually filmed the same day that we started learning it. Took about a half hour to get a run that would be ok in the video, so not bad at all :-)

Rendered the video with an MP4 compression, so will be interesting to see if the video quality is better / worse than it usually is. The file means that it is smaller in size, so perhaps that will help.

We're already discussing additional ways, so there might be more territory to explore here.

Oct. 1 Kid's Show

Our first Kid's show in our 7 week "gig" went very well.

There were 13 kids in the after school program, which will be the ones that our group will be teaching on Wednesday.

Location is Hoover School out on Walnut.

Show was kept rather simple, which always makes it easy.

Did the Belt Raiting system, followed by the basketball routine and finishing off with the club routine.

We were a bit rusty with the clubs, but the kids enjoyed the show.

Currently, Crizzly and Chris Comstock are set for teaching, with other interested individuals encouraged to join them for the fun :-)

The program should be a great way to get kids interested in juggling and also earn the club some $$$!

We also had a great turnout for our Monday group meeting. Am really looking forward to Thursday!

OSU Juggling Club First Meeting!

Greetings!

First off, thanks for stopping by!

The OSU Juggling club is dedicated to having fun and learning new juggling tricks in a friendly and supportive environment.

Through our various members we have a wide variety of skills that we can pass on. Any skill level is welcomed.

Don't know how to juggle yet? Don't worry, we can teach you! Fair warning though, once you learn, you're going to have so much fun that you'll be hooked for life! :-)

Our first official meeting of the school year is as follows:

When: Thursday, Sept. 27, 2007 - 7PM

Where: McAlexander Fieldhouse OSU Campus

How Long: Probably go for about an hour for our first meeting.

What's Involved: Introductions, Demos, set up meeting times, throwing things around, upcoming events.

Cost: Cost? What cost? It's a FREE CLUB to join! :-)

We do several performances through the year, so check out some of our past performances and who knows, the star of the next show could be YOU! :-)

Boys and Girls Club Show

Well . . . teaching and show :-)

Chris Comstock and I participated in the Day Camp for the Boys and Girls club, which means teaching 4 sessions of juggling and then performing a show for the entire camp.

Was a lot of fun. Each session was around 30 minutes, which seemed to be about the right amount of time. Out of each group (probably around a dozen per group) there were at least a couple that were able to juggle by the end, and a few more that would be able to juggle if they had a bit more time.

While lunch was going on, I just threw things around to keep warmed up and have some fun.

We had 30 minutes for the show, and had a lot of fun.

Kept the show pretty simple.

Belt System for juggling (Good Old Reliable :-)
Basketball Routine (Nearly as Reliable)
Closing Club routine to our standard closing music.

Kids really enjoyed the show (as did the adults) and overall it was a lot of fun.

Good warmup for our upcoming events as well!

No video of the experience this time. Next video on the list of "things to do" is a large Wedding Video type thing, that includes lots of juggling and a pretty good variety of stuff. Will be rather long though so I doubt too many people will want to watch it . . . heh heh.

Much Ado Video

Managed to finish editing up the "USO" video from the Much Ado pre-show performances.

Pulled out the "best of" to help reduce the amount of drops (I think the only drops shown are mine . . . heh heh).

Audio quality isn't all that great, but there are some nice shots in there.

I figure I should put together the same sort of thing for the Romeo and Juliet shows as well.

Perhaps that will be the next video project.

Much Ado - Twice on Sunday

Well, we wrapped up the Juggling Shows by doing 2 of them today.

The early show was at 12:30, and looked like it was going to be a very small crowd. As it was, we only had about 35 (if that) in the audience.

We went ahead and did our show anyway, and had a great time. Though the crowd was on the smallish side, they did have a good time and really enjoyed the show.

We of course had a great time as well, and the weather was excellent too. A bit more sunny than we're used to, but at least the sun was in a good spot, so even though we were passing in the bright sunshine, no one had to look into the sun :-)

Routines went quite well and when it came time to collect the money, the small crowd really came through.

In fact . . . the $20 comment (thanks Ed! :-) paid off and we actually got a $20 bill from one of the people watching.

All totalled, we made $61.50 for the club! Looked like we might actually make more than last year all together!

Ahhhh . . . the last show . . .

We did present Scott (the director) with a gift certificate to American Dream pizza. It's really nice that he allows us to do the opening shows. Hopefully we can continue this relationship, as it helps our club so much and I think really helps people pass the time before the actual show starts.

Anyway, with last show in mind, we all went out and gave it our best.

The beanbag routine went pretty well, once it got started . . . heh heh.

Had some fun in the 5 ball section. Threw a 75751, and then threw a 97531. Granted the crowd had no clue what just happened, but I was excited and Crizzly and Comstock were pretty impressed as well. Been wanting to throw that in sometime, just haven't "felt" it. Was feeling it for that routine :-)

Basketball was flawless, and the club passing went really well too.

As far as shows go, it was a great way to end our run.

Plus, we did well with the take!

So, we managed to beat last year's total by nearly $100 :-)

A fantastic start to the convention funds! We are still in the process of figuring out if we're going to have an '08 convention or not. If not, then we will have an '09 one, and that will allow us two seasons of shows to help build up funds.

Much Ado #9

Tonight was the most fun that I have had at the show (thus far of course :-)

Another awesome crowd, full of energy and excitement.

Plus we were still pretty happy about last night's performance, so we kept things rolling.

Comstock went out, did the intro, and then Crizzly wandered out. Just in time to be buzzed by a vintage WWII plane.

Was a very nice looking plane and we got a little bit of it on Camera (I think :-)

Sort of stalled the show for a bit, as the crowd enjoyed the flyover.

Once the plane had departed, we got back on track and the show continued.

Had a couple of drops during the beanbag routine, but finished with a very strong 7 ball juggle to a clean collect. Was super stoked and the crowd was pretty happy with it as well.

Moved onto the basketballs and we actually ran into a bit of trouble there.

The balls were a tad more inflated than we were used to, so a bit more bouncy and a bit more difficult to work with. So, more drops, or bounces, or chases as the case may be . . . heh heh.

The club routine keeps getting a bit better and a bit more smooth. So, we're all having more fun with the show and it . . . . well . . . shows! :-)

Oh yeah, we did pretty well again tonight with the hat.

We even beat last night . . . but not by much.

Mucho Ado #8 is Great-o

Shattered all previous records tonight :-)

Had a very large and attentive crowd. Routines went pretty well. Sound system was a bit on the scratchy side for some odd reason.

Basketball routine got a little behind as the music was a bit low, but we were able to catch up well enough.

The club passing went really quite well!

Lots of fun, and I think the crowd noticed.

Took three of us quite a while to collect the money.

Wound up making $165! We're all rather amazed and certainly don't expect to have that kind of success during the rest of the shows, but we'll enjoy it while we can.

As with last year, the shows are getting easier as everyone is more comfortable with their roles and the routines are getting ever smoother (or at least that's the way they will appear on film after I get done editing them . . . heh heh).

Brenda recorded the show and we'll record the next show at least, with probably recording Sunday's show(s) as well.

Tonight we as a club stayed after and actually watched the show. It was really really good. The cast is great and I would highly recommend people come and check it out!

Hey, this is starting to get routine :-)

Mucho better crowd this time. Plus, we did our best to increase our volume for the show.

And . . . I hope you're all sitting down for this one . . . the music for my beanbag routine was actually started AT THE RIGHT TIME!!!

Yeah, I know . . . shocker . . . heh heh.

Show was a lot of fun and the audience seemed to have a good time as well.

We did much better with our collections and took in $68 this time.

Much Ado #6

Crowd was very very noisy, and only about 1/3 of the crowd was engaged (altho that did include folks all the way to the back row, so it wasn't like they just couldn't hear us - just alot of the crowd were actively trying to have their dinner/drink converstaions over us talking). Dave and Chris think we should use a mic and just drown out the audience with our talking and music.

Speaking of which, our music starter guy wasn't present when we started, so we had to run and start it up ourselves. Dave feels destined to never have the music work perfect for any of his acts. :)

The rest of the show went reasonably well despite the crowd. The club passing wasn't our smoothest, but another run thru the act should get everyone back on the same page (the 'weekend' effected our momentum I suspect). Dave and Chris' basketball shtick went very smoothe, as typical now - congrats there; it's not an easy sequence. :)

Passing the hat: only got $37.47 tonight....but we all have hopes for the typical "good" weekend crowds. :)

Crizzly and Comstock present again today.

Did a similar "luau...drunk...just the two of us" sketch... Crizzly did the ball routine, and the crowd interacted well. They liked the "well, I've seen it enough times" joke, and really liked it when we confirmed that we really were a man down. :)

The pantomime section didn't get too much response, so off to the finalé... We ditched the basketball song, and just did a combined act to the club juggling song. We did a simplified basketball routine, followed by some quick club stuff. The wind wasn't cooperating, so that turned out to be a really good plan.

Still, we made $62.00 passing the hat and ammo can... Of course, we chalked some of that up to Erin (Comstock's fiancé), as we all know the guys aren't nearly as pretty... lol! So, current total is now $277.52

Much Ado #4

Crizzly andComstock met up early to go over some new stuff for the show, as Dave wasn't going to be there today nor tomorrow.

Got some good practice in and plotted a few extras -- "what? got drunk after the luau? hasn't shown up yet? well...I guess I've seen the act enough times - I guess I'll try it myself tonite".

Crowd was great, and thankfully played along... eventually our act got disheveled by the sprinklers coming on (heckler pointed out), and we were laughing too hard to really continue well... We did our best, but crowd reactions got less and less as the show went on.

The basketball routine was a pain for me, but didn't go too badly overall... somehow we wound up off time as we came out to pass as the song ended (phew!!).

Clubs went fine overall... sure, plenty of drops, but somehow our 7 club run went stellar (we lost track of song yet again, so kept running it thinking it was about to end...eventually we bailed after a drop).

Surprisingly (well, to me), we managed to get $46.14 in the hat/ammo can... Total is now $215.52

Got some good practice in and plotted a few extras.

Got it filmed this time as well!

Show, as expected, keeps getting a bit better as we're more comfortable with the routines and such.

Added some three person three club interactions and that went well too.

Not too many drops, and other than a bit of a rough start with the music (ok, who kicked the cord? ;-) the sound went quite smoothly.

Crowd was far more into it this time as well, so that's always encouraging.

Special thanks to Ed, even though you're not here, we did use your "Hat Line" from last year, as it always gets a good response!

So, things are going great!

Crizzly and Comstock will be tackling the shows over the weekend. I'll catch up with them on Monday and see how it all went. I'm sure they will do great and I look forward to getting good reports from the shows!

Thus far, this was the best of the shows to film, so I should be able to pull out some highlights. Would be nice to get the beanbag routine with the acutal music rather than a bunch of improv to start it out. Nice to have some outtakes though (and boy do I have them).

Much Ado #2

Got there nice and early and went through the show a few times.

Did get the sound hooked up so that was a nice bonus :-)

Started the show at 6:25 - and was done by 6:41 with the show portion, with collecting until 6:45.

Music certainly helped keep the show going. The crowd was a lot smaller than opening night's, but we had a lot more fun and were more relaxed for the show.

Our next improvement will be to use Comstock's sound system and Mic so our "Host" can be heard a bit better.

The position of the sun makes things a bit tricky. We had to back up quite a ways in order to do the basketball routine, and passing 7 balls at the first routine was pretty much impossible with the sun.

My juggling wasn't as good as I would have liked it, but I was just happy to have sound, so I wasn't bothered by the drops . . . heh heh.

Our "take" was about the same as the previous night. So, we're a bit more behind last year's pace, but every bit helps for the club, so we'll keep making improvements and see what happens.

A much a deja vu!

Yes, the first show for the Shakespeare Much Ado about Nothing performance was tonight.

If you recall last year's first show, we were without music due to a technical error about not being able to have a power outlet provided.

This time . . . they had a soundboard for us, and I had created a playlist and an audio script to make things easier.

Went over the script with the sound people, and things were pretty well set.

Of course it was also their first show, so there were issues for them too :-)

Things just never quite go the way you plan.

They were scrambling to get the show set up, so wound up getting people in for seating a bit late.

We were shooting for going on at 6:20, but wound up getting started at 6:30, which is fine, as we have a 15 show in mind :-)

Crizzly goes out and starts things up.

I came out, did my "hula" trick and then gave the audio guy the cue.

Nothing . . . .

Crizzly makes a joke about the band, and we set again . . .

More Nothing . . .

So, since it appeared that there wasn't going to be music for the first routine, I went into some 3, 4, 5, and 6 ball juggling. Finished by having the audience vote on if they wanted to see 1 person juggle 7, or TWO people juggle 7. For some odd reason, they wanted to see 1 person juggle seven . . . heh heh.

Decided to show them both. Did a bit of 7 ball juggling (not sure if it was even a qual) and then did some 7 ball ultimate passing with Crizzly.

We went on to the Military routine (thankfully it doesn't have music anyway) and that went pretty well.

At that point, it was getting a bit late for our show (we were at 10 minutes already and still had about 8 minutes of material left) so I decided that we needed to skip the basketball routine (still no music) and go straight into club passing.

Did that for a bit and then had Crizzly give a "USO / OSU" Talk and the pass the hat info.

The three of us wandered around with collection baskets (or ammo holder . . . heh heh) and collected what we could.

We're actually a bit behind last year's pace . . . but not too bad.

All things considered, it was a pretty bad show, but we did the best we could with what we could do.

Things of course will go better tomorrow. Crizzly and Comstock will get to the sound guy around 5pm and we will find a way to get the sound going. Additionally, Crizzly really needs a mic, so we'll see if we can get that going as well.

Trying out new scalable format for blog

Upon noticing that the overwhelming majority of people looking at this blog have a screen width of at least 1280 pixels, I decided to try out a new scalable width blog format. Much Ado About Juggling... err..

So, we got the initial formal-ish request to do the opening performance for the same troupe who put on the fabulously successful Romeo+Juliet last summer... On their website ( http://BardInTheQuad.org/ ), I found this:

Pre-show entertainment

Local performers (such as the OSU Juggling Club) will be invited to perform for our audiences for 30 minutes before the show begins. These performers are not paid and may ask for donations from our audiences. Please be generous!

So, yeah.. we'll post more details as we get them... Current thought is, since it's a WWII motif, to do a USO-style juggling show. :) --Crizzly

I figure this is a blog, so we should use it as such, no? :)

Latest endeavors with clubs include a lot of left hand passing patterns. Basically we're working off a handout I got at a juggling convention a while back. Some of the patterns I can recall at the moment include:

PSSSSPSSSPSSPSPPSPSSPSSSPSSSSPSSSSS or 5count-4count-3count-2count-1count

Martins Mild Madness (a PPS variant where one crosses, the other doesn't, and there's one sync pass-self to confuse everything)

7 club with two ppl as 4count, 3count, 2count, and 1count

a strange six club where you start with (right hand perspective) a double to yourself, then a straight pass, then a crossing, then a self...then you do the same sequence from the left hand. {there's a hidden self pass or two in there to make the passes work, and it has a RRLL moments too, but it all works out}

There's a couple three person patterns we had a chance to do where each person does something different. One easy example is where one person passes outside every other's (like an outside triangle), another does a feed between the other two, and the last does a 2count with one person, but receives clubs from alternating people.

We also did the 3 and 4 person 'clover leaf' or whatever from the IJA newsletter... that's pretty wild too...

Lesse... lately I've been obsessed with juggling trick "chains". Basically, related tricks like:

...and so on. Obviously there are related chains for any number of balls too. So, one three ball chain would be 3, 42, 531, 6330 which relates to the four ball equivalent chain of 4, 53, 642, 7441, 84440, which relates to the five ball 5, 64, 753, 8552, 95551, a55550. We've been working thru these chains as drills for warmup and such, and discovering other chains of tricks along the way. At some point, I intend on putting a few of these on video for a 'starter pack of tricks', likely focussing on the five ball chains. Here are some other samples of chains for you to try out:

(notice this is an intersecting chain to the above two)

One can also make interesting chains by taking a large half-shower (say, the seven ball "95"), and repeating enough times to be able to drop one digit to a '1' by removing a ball. OK, that reads confusing, so let me give you an example:

Q: "I want to do a pattern like '95' but with only six balls, so how would I do that?"

A: make either the '9' or the '5' a '1' by subtracting an apropriate number of digits.

Example1: as we should know with siteswaps, one adds up the numbers, and divides by the digits to get the number of balls in a trick, so "95" is (9+5)/2=14/2=7. We can also see that "9595" works just as well (9+5+9+5)/4=28/4=7. To make that last one a 6 ball trick, the total would have to have been 24 {6=24/4=(28-4)/4 ; a difference of 4 which happens to be the number of digits in our repeated pattern}, or in other words, we can change one of the '5's to a '1' like: "9591".

Example2: We could have chosen to convert a '9' to a '1' {difference of 8} in the above example, but we would have to start with "95959595" {8 digits long} so we could subtract eight from a single '9' in there making "95959515".

The above examples could be applied twice to make the seven ball '95' into a 5 ball variant like "9191" and "95951515" (which is a really fun trick to do, btw!), or "95159515" (which is really "9515" twice), or "15959515" (which is a rotation of the first one).

So, I like '73', and applying the above methods, one can get a four ball versions like '71', '7333', '737313' and so on, and then take each of those and apply yet another chaining method such as:
71, 9151, b15151, ...
737313, 93931313, ...
(4, 53, 633,) 7333, 83333, 933333, ...

all of which can get a reduction as well, ie:
9151 -> 5151
b15151 -> b13131
737313 -> 731313
93931313 -> 93131313
83333 -> 33333

...obviously, some lead to trivialities, but then that's expected. :)
A real simple example of this would be taking the basic six ball pattern '666' and removing a single ball to make the five ball pattern '663'... removing another ball yields '633', and yet another leads to '333'... one could follow that down and do three-with-a-hole as '330', and one-in-a-three-pattern as '300', and ultimately no balls doing a '000' which you are doing right now in fact! ;)

So, yeah, have some fun with those ideas. I know it's kinda math heavy, but then, I was a math major in college... lol! If you have questions, just hit me up at the next meeting or invite me out to a chai or somesuch -- I'd be happy to explain it in terms that will help make more sense for you! :D

In the "That was Fast!" department, Google video nearly gave me whiplash with the speed at which they have turned around the video :-)

Here's the write-up:

Angela was kind enough to pass along this juggling show opportunity to us.

Show was part of the ALAS - "Fiesta Tropical" night. It had a Latin theme with performances by several bands, and some dancing troupes as well. I am SOOOO glad we didn't go on right after the dancers! They were awesome . . . but I do appear to be getting ahead of myself.

Let's drop back one day and go with Friday, the night before the show . . .

Chris Comstock and I met up at 7:30pm to rehearse for the show. Prior in the week I had picked out the three songs I thought we could use, and a general outline idea as to what we could present.

Chris had been working on some basketball juggling stuff, so I thought it would be a lot of fun to come up with some sort of basketball routine. We brainstormed different things we could do, and honestly, I was rather surprised at how quickly and smoothly it went together. Chris came up with some really cool tricks and before too long, we had a show worked out. Well . . . if you count closing down McA at Midnight not being too long ;-) We decided to meet up again at 10:30am to warm up for the show before heading over to check in with the event coordinator.

Had a good warm-up and got over to the event setup around 11am. While waiting for the coordinator to show up, I did some juggling to the vast quantity of Latin music that Crizzly had provided (ok, I just set it on Shakira, but it was really good stuff). Had some really really nice runs with 7 balls. Plus had a couple goes at 8, including a near qual of 99999991 (from now on known as "Nines-and-a-One" [or Ni-ni-nines-n-a-one... --Crizzly]). Ran through the routine on stage and it went pretty well, other than when we dropped one of the basketballs, they travelled a looooooong ways away . .. heh heh (which would be fixed later). With that, we decided to meet back up at 5:15 to do some more rehearsing before the actual show (event started at 6pm - showtime was 7:30).

Had another good practice session and we headed off to the event. There were some technical issues with the mics, so I was actually glad that this was a "just juggle to music" kind of show. I doubt the "comedy juggling"spoken stuff would have gone over all that well. We were told we would go on after "the band". Who also happened to be set up where we had intended on doing our basketball routine. Since there was a lot of open space in front of the raised platform, it was easy enough to just do the routine there. Besides . . . it made tracking down errant basketballs that much more easy :-) While we were supposed to go on at 7:30, we actually wound up going on around 8pm. We just needed a minute of set-up time, and then we were off and running!

I went first, with a 3, 4, 5 beanbag routine. Let me say, it's soooooooo much different actually juggling, in the light, not wearing glow glasses, not wired up, and with beanbags! Different in this case means easier . . . heh heh. Did have one drop (and a bit of a stupid one, but hey, they happen) but for the most part, it went really well. Next was the Basketball Routine. It went very very well! Actually a fair amount smoother than many of the practices. The steals worked out great, and the replacements that Chris came up with were winners too :-) It's tough to get the passing going again when you have to start over, but it worked out well enough. Third portion used our R&J show favorite end song. No drops on the 3 club stuff (Yay!). I really need to work on my collects for 4. So, we'll call that two stupid drops there. I am getting better at knowing the song enough to stop at the right points. The passing went pretty well, and we managed to end with a good run of 7 (despite Chris' best efforts to make me work ;-) I think we were both pretty spent towards the end of the show.

So, all in all, it went great! Chris and I both had a ton of fun, not only dong the performance, but coming up with the show as well. I certainly think the routine is a keeper and will be used at more events :-)

Corvallis Close-up #3

Greetings!

The third installment of the PNWJC - Corvallis
Close-up series - "Juggling Community", is now "live"
on Google.

This video focuses on the groups and key individuals
that are putting forth great efforts to host the
convention.

Well, plus a nod to the people that really enjoy
juggling shows :-)

And a subtle reference to the cost of the convention
to the attending individuals.

One of the things I notice is that I refer to the
Corvallis Juggling & Unicycling group as the "One
Wheeled Wonders".

I can change that to "One Wheel Wonders" or "Corvallis
Juggling & Unicycling Group" if you'd like. Sure it
means editing the original movie, re-rendering the
film, deleting the current one, uploading the new one,
and making a couple of other changes, but hey, I'll do
it :-)

I do like the way this one came out. As usual, it was
a lot of fun to put together. I think it has a bit
less "cheese" than the first one (despite the "picture
in picture" tool discovery that I made) but it gets
some shout outs and at least establishes the fact that
there are waaaaaaaaaaay more than just one juggler in
Corvallis :-)

We're down to a bit over 60 days left, so I see time
for perhaps 2 more Close-ups.

I'd still like to do a Juggling Restaurants video, and
am open to suggestions for other video(s).

If we want more, then we'll need to step up the
shooting schedule / release dates.

Anyway, enjoy, and Ed, if you'd like to do the honors
of posting to the shark tank, that would be great!

As you no doubt noticed by the calendar above, we have no more juggling meetings this year [building closures = no place to juggle]. I recommend showing up at the Corvallis club on the 18th if you desire and are still in the area. Of course, if you have a place you'd like to meet, or if the weather suddenly turns to a dry 65F one day, you can always post to the mailing list a "hey, come join me at ..."! :D

New meeting times??

As you already probably noticed, I sent out an email on our email list asking about new meeting times. I haven't gotten very much response yet, but still have hopes that folks will look a their schedules and provide some input in the near future. I have intents of discussing this further at our pizza meeting on Jan 4th [see calendar for details].

In case your email system of choice ate the posting, here's a copy for your review:

I understand that most should know their schedules for next term around now. To that end, I was hoping for input from everyone on what day(s) and time(s) would work best for them to show up for. My goal is to come up with (at least) two 2-3hr windows that would accomodate folks being able to attend for at least an hour during, thereby increasing attendance and thus the enjoyment of everyone involved. :)

I suspect the following would encompass most people's interest for a meeting time, if not, please suggest another.

I'm still trying to get the mic for the voice over
figured out. It's a bit better this time, but could
still be improved.

Credits look great (thanks Crizzly) and the entire
process has been a lot of fun to put together. Brenda
and my Dad did really nice camerawork, and the
locations were a lot of fun to scout out (especially
Reser Stadium - thanks Kate!)

Local feedback is good to get as well, so if people
have comments, suggestions, inspirations, or requests,
feel free to let me know! :-)

Finished editing the video last evening. Uploaded
last night at American Dream :-)

Didn't think it would be live yet, but it's up and
running.

Has had 4 (now 5 as I watched it) views, with one
person giving it 5 stars :-) Odd that 4 people
watched it before I could even check to see if it was
live. How do people find this stuff? . . . heh heh.

Take a look at it, see if you think it's what we're
looking for in style and composition. Also if people
have suggestions as to topics for the close-ups, let
me know.

IJA 2006 Photos & Video

Here are some of the photos I took at this year's IJA event in Portland, Oregon. The first picture is of Antje and Comstock. Notice the creepy looking guy hiding behind them? That's David Sallee, club instructor.

The next photo is Antje, Dave (without creepyness, and Comstock.

Dave and Max (of the Cascade Jugglers in Seattle) go head to head in a 5b endurance competition. Dave was the winner! Afterwards, Max did 7, 5b 5-up 360s in one minute.

Here is a photo of Dave, the lovely Erin Stephens, Ed, and Antje. Erin Stephens is famous for her juggling videos, great skill, and charming personality. It's always a pleasure to hang out with her.

Dave, Comstock, and Graham (of the Victoria Juggling Club) talk about plans for the NW Juggling Festival to be held in Corvallis in March.
